The sun which shone on Penryn for a few brief hours on Sunday afternoon gave the mayor just enough time for a successful fundraising cricket match.

Two teams met at St Gluvias Cricket Club for a Twenty20 match, with supporters enjoying a barbecue and raffle, while raising money towards the new Penryn Memory Cafe which opens next week.

Mayor Mark Snowdon, who helped his team to victiry with 25 runs, said: "We raised £633, which I'm absolutely gobsmacked with. That's just brilliant.

"gill Grant, her partner Tom, and Kirtsy, a club member, raised £122, the raffle Ann and Jim from Penryn Rotary did a raffle and raised £100, and the players, scorers and umpire all donated. People just dipped their hands into their pockets.

"I had a goal of £400 and thought I would be absolutely delighted, I'm over the moon."

he said the atmosphere was "great," with a close-run match and spectators turning up to support, although he thinks there would have been more if the rest of the weekend weather hadn't been so bad. With almost a full week of rain having hit the pitch, it had seemed doubtful the night before whether any game would be played, but then the weather relented and the teams "had a hell of an evening."

Now Mark is looking forward to next Wednesday when he officially opens the Memory Cafe, which is aimed at helping people with dementia and their families, and can hand over the cheque.
