There was pulling and ploughing aplenty in Porthleven recently as the farming community of Helston and the Lizard came together for a day of competition.

Spectators flocked to Penrose campsite in Porthleven to watch members of the Helston and St Keverne Young Farmers Club take part in various events.

There were 34 contestants in the club's ploughing match, with 38 taking part in the tractor pull, and plenty of competitors submitting entries inside the domestic tent.

Peter Curnow, one of the organisers, said: "The weather was a bit wet the day before but that mean that a lot of people had the day off for the match because they couldn't do anything else. We were happy with the amount of people that turned up."

He added that the weather had helped with conditions for the match, as recent hot weather had made the ground dry, and the previous day's rain had helped loosen it up.

He added: "Everyone enjoyed themselves, and hopefully the people who cam along enjoyed it as well."

following the day's competitions there was a disco in the evening, which was well attended.

The event raised in excess of £2,000 for the Headland Unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, which provides cancer care including outpatient chemotherapy.
