Christmas in Penryn will be bigger and brighter this year after a fundraising campaign for new lights collected well over £2,000, with more still to come.

The town will be lit up with brand new strings of Christmas lights this year, thanks to the donations of local businesses and residents who gave generously to the Light up Penryn campaign, with a Crowdfunder collecting £2,238: over 74 per cent of its £3,000 target.

Mark Snowdon, chairman of the Christmas Lights Committee and mayor of Penryn, said: “Without this money we would not have been able to replace the lines of lights and the town would not have been as festive as it usually looks. I am delighted that now we can light up Penryn for years to come.”

The final total for the campaign is yet to be confirmed, with a big announcement expected at the switch-on of the lights on Saturday, December 5.

Mark added: “We will be doing a big reveal of the amount raised at the switch on. The evening will be well worth coming along for with several different choirs and groups performing around the town.”

The lights will be turned on in a ceremony outside the Methodist Church at 6.30pm, followed by carols led by Penryn Primary Academy Choir, and there will be mince pies and mulled wine in the Town Hall.

There will also be a civic carol concert hosted by the mayor at the Methhodist Church on Sunday, December 6, at 6.30pm.
