A new crossing is to be created on one of Helston’s busiest main roads to help children get to school safely and reduce cars in a congested area of the town.

Cornwall Council has agreed that a school crossing point can be added to Meneage Road, which many families have to cross twice a day to get to Nansloe Academy.

A lollipop person will be now be recruited to oversee the crossing before and after school.

Councillor Andrew Wallis, who has been pushing for the crossing, said: “This is due a large number of children attending Nansloe Academy from other parts of Helston.

“This road is busy and therefore parents choose to drive their children to school rather than walk. A solution needed to be found to allow children to cross safety and reduce traffic in and around the school.”

To qualify for a ‘school crossing patrol,’ as it is known, a certain number of children have to cross the road at peak school times, either with or without a parent.

A number of visits have been made to the road to monitor numbers and as a result the council has said figures are high enough.

Mr Wallis added: “Before the site is operational a small amount of engineering works will need to be undertaken, and someone will need to be recruited to the position.

“I am very pleased there will be a crossing here. It is something I and the school have wanted for some time. Thank you Cornwall Council for finding the money for this.”

The council’s highways department is currently looking at exactly where to have the crossing.

Mr Wallis said he was still in talks about having either a permanent crossing on the road, or a pedestrian island, to make to easier to cross at all times of the day.
