Falmouth and Truro MP Sarah Newton says she is disappointed in the EU referendum result but would continue to ensure that investment in Cornwall would continue.

Speaking to Packet the morning after the EU referendum produced a victory for leave, Mrs Newton said she was also saddened by the resignation of David Cameron, who she saw as honourable politician.

"I am personally disappointed in the result, however the people have spoken and I will work really hard with my Cornish colleagues to make sure we get the best deal we can for Cornwall.

"My first priority is that Cornwall was expecting to get another £500 million from the EU. The Local Enterprise Partnership had put together a really good plan.

“My first priority is to ensure that the UK government honours that. There is a lot of uncertainty but my job is to put Cornwall first. I will be getting together with other Cornish MPs and making a very strong case for Cornwall.”

She said the Port of Falmouth was one of the things that would be at the top of her list to secure investment.

She said it was most important that we remain stable and calm to deal with the economic shock.

She also said she was shocked by the resignation of David Cameron. “He was an excellent prime minister and an excellent friend to Cornwall,” she said. “While he was PM Cornwall saw a lot of investment.”

She added that the referendum was a manifesto commitment at the last election and he had no choice but to call the referendum.

“There was a feeling in the country that we had to address this issue. More and more people felt they hadn’t had a say on the relationship with the EU. The issue did need to be addressed.”

She said it was business as usual now and she would fight to get the best deal for all her constituents and get the best deals for them in ‘challenging’ times.

Speaking about backing the remain campaign, Mrs Newton said she took what she thought was the best position for her constituents. She said would like to thank those who voted remain and those who had led a positive campaign.
