Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses following a serious crash between a school bus and a 4x4 on the Helston to Mullion road last week.

As previously reported by the Packet, the crash on Wednesday involved a Daihatsu Fourtrak and a school bus as they reached the junction with the Skyburriowe Lane at around 3.50pm.

The bus was carrying 13 students at the time, on their way home from Mullion School.

The driver of the 4x4, a 24-year-old man from Helston, is now fighting for his life at Derriford Hospital after receiving life threatening head, chest and leg injuries.

The bus driver received leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, as was a 15-year-old boy travelling on the bus, with several pupils suffering minor injuries.

Police have now released more information about the crash, with a spokesperson stating: “The blue Daihatsu was travelling from Helston towards Mullion when it was in collision with a hedge and then the oncoming bus, which was on a school run.

“Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident and anyone who can assist with the investigation is asked to contact police on email via 101@dc.police.uk or by telephone on 101, quoting log number 508 of 12 October 2016.”

The road was closed for six and a half hours while officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Team carried out an examination of the scene.
