One of the BBC’s most senior figures has said a year spent in Falmouth was the most important of his life.

Jonathan Wall, the Controller of BBC 5 Live, told an audience of Falmouth University students how his career in journalism began with a report on the new Penryn bypass in 1993.

Mr Wall graduated from Falmouth University’s broadcast journalism course in 1994 and became controller of the BBC’s live news and sport station in 2013.

A group of more than 100 students also heard from Mr Wall that young people in Cornwall have more opportunity than ever to make a career in the global media. Global connectivity and new technology has made location less important, while skills and education are more in demand.

He added that people’s thirst for news was stronger than ever, whether in Mabe or Mogadishu, and the challenge for the industry was helping young people gain the knowledge to help make sense of the “information overload”.

The lecture was the first in the university’s new guest lecture series, which will be open to the public, with tickets available through Eventbrite.
