Penryn's iconic clock tower could have lead flashings added to one of its levels if Cornwall Council gives planning approval.
Penryn Town Council has applied for permission to carry out work to the third - or middle - ledge of the grade II* listed building as water is currently getting inside and causing damage to walls and timber work.
During repairs in 2005 and 2006, lead flashings were added to the top two tiers of the tower, at the same time as the dome was re-leaded and the clock refurbished, but work was not carried out on the middle tier.
The council has applied for listed building consent for three waterproofing measures: adding traditional lead flashings to the pedimented ledges of the third level, re-pointing defective stonework joints in lime mortar, and applying an approved clear coating solution to the upper three faces of the stonework.
At the same time, it is hoped that work will be carried out to refurbish the clock faces and redecorate the woodwork of the tower.
