Helston's councillors have continued their objections to the proposed extension of the town's Bulwark Estate, despite attempts by applicants Coastline Housing to allay concerns.

The housing authority hopes to build 75 affordable homes on fields behind Nansloe Academy, creating a new access road past the primary school.

Existing residents in that area are concerned over the possible safety implications, however, not only through the increase in traffic in an already congested area but also building so close to neighbouring RNAS Culdrose, which is approximately 660 metres away now.

Many residents shared their fears at Thursday's meeting of Helston Town Council's planning committee, which was attended by 22 members of the public.

The plans were brought back before the council after Coastline commissioned a road safety audit and a "construction phase" traffic management plan, following concerns that there was not enough information on highways issues and noise impact.

However, councillors continued with their original views from last October and voted to recommend the plans be refused due to "insufficient information regarding current and future noise impact and safety issues for residents of the area," with members asking a full environmental study be carried out.

Members also said there were "unsatisfactory traffic management issues," particularly in relation to the junctions and drop-off area near Nansloe Academy, which they felt "does not require a circuitous exit route."

A decision on the scheme will be taken by Cornwall Council on Monday, March 6 at the council offices in Dolcoath Avenue, Camborne. The meeting of the planning committee will begin at 2pm and is open to the general public, although people can only speak if they register in advance.
