CCTV cameras are to be put up at one of Helston’s most prolific areas of fly-tipping, with a warning that offenders will be prosecuted.

Cornwall councillor Judith Haycock revealed that the authority had finally agreed to take action on land adjacent to the layby on Sithney Common Hill, which has been an ongoing source of complaint over fly-tipping for years.

Mrs Haycock told town councillors the Cornwall Council had initially thought it had found a solution, with plans to fence off that whole area.

“But we have had the quotes back and it’s an extortionate amount of money,” she explained.

“They’ll now put cameras down there. If anyone does any fly-tipping they will be caught and prosecuted.”

In response to a question from town councillor Mike Thomas over the quotes given for what he saw as a “small area that needs fencing” to actually prevent people from physically getting the rubbish over the side of the layby, Mrs Haycock said she was not able to reveal the amounts in case such work was carried out at a later date.
