The future is looking bright for Helston running race An Res Hellys after two groups stepped in to save it.

There had been fears Sunday's event featuring almost 500 runners was to have been the last ever, following a change in who will provide the county's leisure services in the future.

Tempus Leisure is handing over to Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL), trading as Better, on Saturday after the later company was awarded a new 25-year contract by Cornwall Council.

GLL had said while it was happy to support similar events, this would only be if another party decided to stage them.

Now Carn Runners and Tri Logic has stepped forward to organise another An Res Hellys next year, maintaining its position as the fifth event in the Cornwall Road Running Grand Prix Series.

A new sub-committee will now be formed, which will meet in the near future to put more firm plans into place.

It is understood a number of other organisations have also come forward to pledge their support.

Ceri Harvey, who has been involved in organising the event with Tempus, has offered to continue her involvement for next year as a member of both Carn Runners and Tri Logic but said the planning was still at the very early stages.

She said: "They're not planning to change anything dramatically, as in the route or where it's based. They're not planing to particularly change the date it's on.

"I can't envisage it being much different, but we've still to meet with everyone in one room and work out which club is taking on which bit.

"In the next couple of months we'll be getting together with various organisations and seeing where the support will be.

"There is certainly a lot of love for the event."
