A week of tidying has begun in Helston as the town makes its annual preparations for Flora Day.

Residents are urged to give an hour or two of their time for Helston Town Tidy all this week, to make sure the streets look their best for May 6.

Beginning on Sunday with the area around the bottom of The Furry and Monument Road, work continued on Monday evening when 1st Helston Brownies joined the team at the Tyacke Road car park and the adjoining opes that lead to Coinagehall Street.

As a result of their help, 27 bags of litter and green waste were collected in that area alone, with the brownies described as "superstars."

Last night was the turn of the Castle Green steps and car park, the boating lake and Coronation Park car park, while tonight attention will turn to Wheelbarrow Lane, Five Wells and Cobbled Ope, with volunteers meeting at 6pm by the cannon outside Helston Museum.

On Thursday volunteers will meet at the scout hut in the King George V Playing Fields at 6pm for work on the fields and access paths, while Friday is the turn of the Trengrouse Way car parks and paths, including the alley next to Alley Barbers and those leading around Parc-An-Dower.

Town Tidy Week concludes on Saturday between 10am and 12.30pm, although the area to be tackled will be decided once all the other work has been carried out. For details nearer the time visit the Helston Town Tidy Facebook page.

Both Tesco and Sainsbury's in Helston have also offered their support and will be working on the Henry Trengrouse memorial garden at the top of Trengrouse Way, the sunken garden in Coinage Ope and the area around Captain's Lane.

Members of Helston-Lizard Rotary Club began their own unofficial clean up at the start of the month, spending a weekend painting the white wash walls at St Johns bridge, near to the Spar roundabout, Coronation Park and Penhellaz Hill.
