A 27-year-old man has died after being rescued from the sea near Newquay last night.
He was among a group of three holidaymakers who got into difficulty after being caught in a rip tide and swept out to sea at Crantock Beach.
The HM Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter along with two RNLI lifeboats and the Coastguard Rescue Team from Newquay, police and ambulance, were sent to the incident at around 7.30pm.
The three, who were staying in the area, were rescued from the water by two local surfers and then airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital by the coastguard helicopter.
A police spokesperson said: "The 27-year-old man was pronounced deceased a short time later. His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and police will be carrying out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.
"The other two swimmers, aged 17 and 18, remain at Treliske Hospital but are not believed to be seriously injured."
