Those heading up country for the weekend today are going to face long delays after a fatal accident on the M5 in Somerset this morning.

The motorway is likely to remain closed throughout the afternoon and this evening to allow investigations to take place.

The Highways Agency issued a warning saying the M5 between junction 26 (Wellington) and junction 25 (Taunton) is expected to remain closed throughout this afternoon and into the evening following a serious incident.

It is advising drivers to consider delaying their journeys or use alternative routes.

The motorway is closed in both directions following the incident at around 6.20am today.

Northbound traffic is advised to exit the M5 at junction 26 and follow the solid black triangle diversion symbol. Take the A38 northbound and re-join the M5 at junction 25.

Southbound traffic is advised to exit the M5 at junction 25 and follow the solid black square diversion symbol. Take the A358 east through West Hatch. At Horton Cross, take the A303 southbound through Newcott and then the A30 towards Honiton. Re-join the M5 at junction 29.

Northbound traffic coming from further south may wish to exit the M5 at junction 29 and head north using the A30 as an alternative.
