People across Cornwall have taken to social media this afternoon after unexpectedly feeling the effects of an earthquake.

The British Geological Survey has confirmed in the last few minutes that the epicentre of the quake was approximately 20km north-north east from Swansea, with 4.4 magnitude at a depth of 7.4km.

It said that earthquakes of this level only happen in the UK every two to three years.

And while it may be three full days after Valentine’s Day, the earth certainly moved for some in the county at around 2.30pm, with people reporting feeling a “thud” and even doors opening and closing.

BBC journalist Donna Birrell wrote on Twitter how her wardrobe doors had opened and closed before the “room moved.”

She added: “Very odd just now, everything in my house shook for a few seconds. Is it just me or was it an earth tremor?”

Other reports have come in from West Cornwall, Truro, St Agnes and St Day locally, as well as further afield as far as The Midlands, Manchester and Liverpool.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), an independent scientific organisation based in Paris but with members in 55 different countries, has released a map showing the locations of more than 4,000 locations where tremors are reported to have been felt.

It said the effects of the earthquake had been felt more than 300km from the epicentre.
