Helston Town Council has objected to a new takeaway opening up just off the town centre, fearing neighbours would be affected by the fumes.

Cornwall Council has yet to make a decision on whether to allow the change of use of the former Ecologic unit at 2 Horse And Jockey Lane into a hot food takeaway. The type of food proposed to be sold is not known at this time.

Andrew Turrell, of Churn Valley (Monmouth) Ltd, has also applied for permission to add an extractor fan and ventilation duct on the building.

However, the planning committee of Helston Town Council has recommended this be refused, believing it was an "inappropriate location" for such a business due the "unsuitability of the location to accommodate proper extraction."

The building has residential accommodation on the first floor above and to both sides, and members were concerned that the fumes would have a negative impact on the neighbours.

Councillors also said there was insufficient information in the application over the noise level of the extractor or a ventilation score.

However, they said that if Cornwall Council were minded to approve the application then conditions should be added to make sure the business followed "the strict guidelines recently imposed on other food outlets in the town" and the extraction system and height of the flue be strictly controlled in accordance with DEFRA guidelines, as well as minimised in its appearance in a conservation zone.
