PLANS for the rebuilding of the fire-ravaged Falmouth Beach Hotel have been recommended for approval by town planners.

The new building will match the size and design of the original hotel, which was destroyed by flames on April 30 this year.

A meeting of Falmouth Town Council’s planning committee on Monday evening heard from a letter written by the owner of the neighbouring St Michael’s Hotel calling for a number of conditions to be placed on the rebuilding project.

Mr Carpenter asked for screening three-quarters of the height of the planned new building to be erected between his hotel and the construction site.

He also asked for working hours on the project to be limited to 9am to 5pm, and for work to only take place between Monday and Friday.

He also called for the majority of the work to be carried out during the off-season period.

Committee chairman Diana Merrett said: “We need to get the Falmouth Beach Hotel rebuilt as soon as possible, and I am calling for it to be done full steam ahead.”

Councillor Charlie Choak responded: “If you have been abroad, paid for a good hotel and ended up with a building site next door, you know how bad it can be.

“We should meet Mr Carpenter halfway.”

Councillor Oliver Cramp said: “I agree with councillor Choak, we have to consider the running of the hotel next door, people do not want to book into a hotel and discover they have booked into a building site.”

The committee recommended the plans should be approved subject to a number of conditions, including a ban on the use of power tools before 9am, and for a suitable barrier to be erected between the two hotels.

However, they agreed to allow work to take place on the site seven days a week.
