By a strange twist of fate at Christmas the German general cargo ship Pamir berthed on County wharf exactly 58 years to the day since the famous German sailing ship Pamir made her last call.
The last time the magnificent barque berthed in Falmouth was in December 1956 when stevedores had to secure her cargo of methylated spirits. She was on passage from Antwerp to Montevideo. She stayed alongside until January 10, 1957 while a considerable number of barrels were discharged and transferred to Coast Lines Wharves. The barrels were subsequently loaded on to Pamir's sister ship the Passat.
Homeward bound from Buenos Aires with a cargo of barley the Pamir was 42 days out when she crossed the path of hurricane Carrie 600 miles south west of the Azores and sank with the loss of 89 lives.
