The 2015 cruise ship season was due to get off to a flying start today with a two ship visit from the vessels Hamburg and Boudicca who are both on garden related cruises in western Europe.

Now it is understood that the Hamburg has cancelled her planned call due to technical problems. This is yet another blow to the port this year as cruise ship numbers are down on previous years.

Boudicca, which is arriving from Dover, was expected at the pilot station at 4.30am for a 6am berthing on County wharf.

The Hamburg is making another call here on May 8 on her “Mysterious Britain” circumnavigation of the British Isles cruise. Passengers will be taking excursions to Land’s End, a following in the footsteps of Rosamund Pilcher tour and a trip to St Ives.

Readers will recognise the Hamburg as the former c. Columbus from the Hapag-Lloyd fleet.  Her relative size allows her to transit the Great Lakes in North America which she cruised seasonally between 1997 and 2011 – one of the few modern cruise ships and the only German one able to do so.
