WITH the shipping industry fighting the global recession, the River Fal lay-up berths are in constant demand when a berth becomes available.
Earlier this week, the car carrier Autocarrier left the River Fal for the docks before she goes for scrapping. The German-owned container vessel San Francisco leaves the river in the next few days only to be replaced by the larger container vessel Santa Monica on July 9.
Both ships are from the stable of Claus-Peter Offen, founded in 1971, based in Hamburg, which is one of the world’s largest suppliers of modern container ship tonnage.
It has some 130 container vessels in service or currently under construction; most of them are chartered under long-term contract to leading shipping lines.
They are employed in worldwide service.
