P&O Cruises’ 45,000 ton luxury cruise ship Artemis will be berthing alongside the County Wharf when she makes her inaugural call under her new name on July 14 on her Round Britain cruise.
As the former Royal Princess, she berthed alongside at the docks many times when she brought mainly American passengers to the port.
Departing from Southampton on July 5, Artemis will offer an 11-night debut tour of the British Isles. A product from the Wartsila Shipyard, Helsinki, Finland, the £70 million Royal Princess, was one of the world’s top cruise ships when christened by HRH the Princess of Wales in 1984.
When launched, Royal Princess was described as the most technically advanced passenger ship ever built. She is 761 feet long with a draught of 26.2 feet.
Falmouth and P&O have strong connections dating back nearly 200 years and therefore it is rather poignant that the company has chosen Falmouth as one of their ports of call.
Artemis is a far cry from the 115 ton steam ships Don Juan and William Fawcett, which the founders of P&O, Brodie Willcox and Arthur Anderson, used to promote a new mail service from London and Falmouth to Spain and Portugal in 1837.
