Forty years ago today Sir Robin Knox-Johnston became an international hero when he sailed his beloved 32ft ketch ‘Suhaili’ into Falmouth, becoming the first person to sail round the globe, single-handed and non-stop.
BBC TV series ‘Top Dogs: Adventures in War, Sea and Ice’ shown this month tested Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, journalist John Simpson and Sir Ranulph Fiennes to the limit.
When Robin Knox-Johnston sailed from Falmouth on his epic round the world voyage in June 1968 few people saw him off, but thousands turned out to welcome him home.
“I’m beginning to wonder how much of the original boat I am going to be left with by the time I reach home,’’ writes Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in his book ‘A World of My Own’. “So far, I have written off the self-steering gear, two tillers, a jib, a spinnaker, half the cooking stove, and the water tank. The cabin has shifted, leaks, and its canvas cover is cracking up.”
