After 312 days at sea, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston sailed into the history books and into the hearst of those who saw him home

Robin Knox-Johnston arrives back in Falmouth in 1969

When Robin Knox-Johnston sailed from Falmouth on his epic round the world voyage in June 1968 few people saw him off, but thousands turned out to welcome him home.

Sir Robin's epic account

“I’m beginning to wonder how much of the original boat I am going to be left with by the time I reach home,’’ writes Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in his book ‘A World of My Own’. “So far, I have written off the self-steering gear, two tillers, a jib, a spinnaker, half the cooking stove, and the water tank. The cabin has shifted, leaks, and its canvas cover is cracking up.”
