Filming success for Falmouth

FALMOUTH is becoming a hub for TV production companies looking to film in the UK, according to town manager Richard Gates.

Mr Gates was addressing a meeting of the town council last week when he made the claim.

He told councillors: “For the last 20 weeks, I have talked with major networks at least once a week, including Sky Atlantic, Sky Living and others, about filming in Falmouth.

“They all talk to each other and if they get a positive reaction in town and we help them, then we will get more and more coming back.”

I'm all for our local tradesmen and shopkeepers making some cash from visitors but I am concerned that television companies may attract the wrong sort to our lovely little town - namely nouveau riche 'celebrities' and their hangers on. Look at the mass hysteria last year caused by that young American actor who was acting in a zombie film. Cornwall has by far and away enough celebrities already thank you very much and they tend to do the decent thing and stay away from the public gaze along the Helford and Padstow way. Most of them don't bother us and quite right. London is the natural place for these people, where the great unwashed are impressed by actors and that sort of thing. I'm just saying we should be on our guard if media cronies start to move in...

Are there any facts behind this or is it all just speculation? I am all for good news for Falmouth but not guesswork, smoke and mirrors just to try and make things and people look good.
What will it cost us to help them? Will it be worth it or will we end up subsidising the film industry to our detriment?

It surely will be to our detriment if we have to share our delightful town with soap opera stars, reality show people and actors. It only leads to scandal, hysteria and law breaking and of course media intrusion. Let's keep Falmouth real for real people.
