Man who lived in van in court over blocking steps

A man who lives in his van has appeared before a court after he parked it in Falmouth’s Meadowbank Road and obstructed access to some steps.

Roger Knight told Truro magistrates that residents nearby had called the police about him because they felt his van was spoiling their view.

Knight, aged 39, who gave his address as care of Penpol Terrace, Hayle, pleaded guilty to causing obstruction with the van on November 6, blocking steps which the court heard gave access from the high pavement to the road.

A police officer had put an advice note on the van after a complaint was made to her, but this had been removed and the van remained where it was.

Knight told the magistrates he believed the complaining residents had removed the advice notice because he had never seen it, and they had then called the police again.

He said he had parked there because there was other access to the steps further along the road and there had been no sign banning parking where he stopped. Knight was given a conditional discharge and detained in court in lieu of payment of court costs.

Why is he responsible for court costs and being detained. It appears he has not been convicted of anything.

He's probably been found guilty of causing a nuisance. He should have played the game and moved his van after a couple of days and then no one would have complained. It's when vehicles, any vehicles, don't move for long periods that people living nearby get all in a tizzy. I know it annoys me. Parking is a nightmare where I live and to take up a space for weeks on end is such a wind up.
