The cruise ship season begins this week with the arrival of the Bermuda-flagged cruise ship Discovery on her Springtime Gardens and Charms cruise.

Discovery is now operating under its new joint venture partners, All Leisure Holidays and Cruise and Maritime Voyages. She returns to Falmouth on May 1 on her Treasures of the British Isles cruise.

World acclaimed cruise ship expert Douglas Ward said: “Discovery is best suited to people who enjoy visiting interesting destinations in the comfort of a ship that’s traditional in style, unpretentious and with a casual dress code, and doesn’t bother with much entertainment or organised parlour games.”

Waterfront watchers may recall Discovery coming here on cruise calls in the 1990s when she was the Island Princess. She is famous for the role she played in the TV series The Love Boat. As the Island Princess she operated under Princess Cruises until 1999 when she was sold to Hyundai Merchant Marine of South Korea. Renamed Hyundai Pungak she transported South Korean pilgrims to religious sites in North Korea.

The UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency detained the cruise ship at Portland after the crew was unable to launch lifeboats in a pre-cruise safety drill in February.
