Plans for a new multi-million pound veterinary practice in Penryn, first revealed by the Packet earlier this year, have been formally submitted.

Rosemullion Vets, which also has branches across Falmouth and Helston, want to build the 7,300 sq ft (680m2) hospital on land behind the Asda in Penryn to replace their existing facilities on Melvill Road, Falmouth.

Three times the size of the current building, the new hospital will offer more parking and employment for an additional six staff members.

Philip Howson, from walkers' group the Ramblers, welcomed a proposed new cycle and pedestrian route through the site that forms part of the plans.

“This will contribute to the permeability of the area and will be of great benefit when other nearby developments, some of which already have permission, have been built,” he said.

Concerns were raised by Mr Howson that the path would not be designated as a public right of way and may not be wide enough for both pedestrians and cycles, however.

If Rosemullion’s plans are approved, the hospital in Falmouth will be downgraded and the surgery in Penryn closed. No jobs are forecast to be lost in the move.

A decision is due to be made by Cornwall Council before July 29.
