Geoffrey Evans, who has been Falmouth’s longest serving mayor, has become president of one of the town’s longest established theatre groups.

Mr Evans, who is due to step down as mayor next month, has accepted the invitation to become president of Falmouth Theatre Company, taking over from Thelma Bown-Hargreaves who held the position for ten years and has been an active member of the company for 64 years.

She said: “I am sorry to leave this position but it is an honour to hand over the role to Mr Evans. I am so pleased to leave the company in his good hands and will enjoy watching it grow under his care.”

FTC, previously known as the Falmouth Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, has been staging high quality productions in Falmouth for over 80 years. Mr Evans has attended many performances by the company and has been a long standing supporter and friend to the group.

The company has sent its “heart-felt thanks” to Mrs Bown-Hargreaves for all her hard work and dedication and wish her well in her retirement.

Although still a member of the group, she is looking forward to taking a less active role in the future.

Following the success of last years’ production of Hello Dolly, Falmouth Theatre Company will return to the stage next month with the musical revue A Night at the Musicals, which will be performed at King Charles Hall in New Street from May 28 to 31.

This production will mark FTC’s 88th year in operation and will feature songs from the likes of Cats, Oklahoma, Wicked and the Sound of Music.

To mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, the show will also feature a tribute to all those affected by the war, by featuring well known favourites such as Pack Up Your Troubles, Goodbye-ee and Land of Hope and Glory. For tickets go to falmouththeatrecomapny.ticketsource.co.uk.
