Staff and parents were on hand to witness the shouts and jumps of joy from students at Penryn College as they ripped open the envelopes containing their much anticipated GCSE results on Thursday.

All students at the college performed “very well” with many making “exceptional progress” in their five years at the school. The girls in particular have reason to celebrate |as they once again outperformed the boys, with 70 per cent of them gaining more than five GCSEs including English and maths.

Only half an A* GCSE grade separated the contenders for top performer. Garth Stone and Thalia Richardson together accumulated 22.5 A* and A grades with Garth winning by a whisker. The next highest performers, in alphabetical order, were Dan Altenberg, Katy Bek, Grace Davies, Sam Franklin, Tom Holmes, Bethan Mew, Rosie Miller, Tatiana Papastavrou, and Elena Symes. Over 340 of the grades were A* and A grades and a significant number of students followed closely on their heels.

Students performed exceptionally well in maths with 75 per cent attaining Grade C or better. In the year group, 63 per cent of the young people achieved five or more A* to C grades with 57 per cent gaining five or more GCSEs including English and maths.

Head teacher Marie Hunter said: “Everyone who attended the college left with GCSE qualifications. Special praise must be given to those students who have to work hard to overcome specific learning needs. They have done particularly well, averaging five GCSEs each.

“This year group also had a number of students who, when they joined us in year seven, found reading and writing very hard. They have worked hard to master these essential skills, helped by their teachers and parents. They have all attained grades in GCSE English.”

Congratulations have also gone to 178 GCSE philosophy and ethics students and 196 scientists – 128 in GCSE core science and 68 in GCSE chemistry – who have earned these qualifications a year early.

“Superb results only come with tremendous hard work by the young people, dedicated support from home and great teaching,” added Mrs Hunter.

“The young people had worked incredibly hard and have reaped the rewards they richly deserve. Congratulations from everyone at Penryn College. Enjoy your celebrations – you worked hard |for them.”
