A quick thinking volunteer RNLI lifeguard at Gyllyngvase rescued a woman from the water on Saturday after she was spotted struggling in the choppy seas.
Volunteer RNLI lifeguard Georgia Christophers was in the water training with Gyllyngvase Surf Lifesaving Club on Saturday at around 5.45pm when she spotted a woman who was panicking and struggling in the water.
The conditions in the water were very choppy with strong winds and Georgia paddled over to the woman and signalled to RNLI lifeguard Sam Crowther on the beach for backup.
The pair helped the woman to shore, while lifeguard Hugo Newington-Smith remained on the beach.
Once ashore, the lifeguards assessed the casualty and administered casualty care. The woman had inhaled a large amount of water and was showing signs of hypothermia.
Paramedics were called and she was taken to hospital for further treatment. She was later discharged from hospital and returned to the beach to thank the lifeguards.
Paying tribute to Georgia, who has has given over 100 hours of her time this year to volunteer for the RNLI as a lifeguard across various beaches, Sam said: "If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of lifeguard volunteer Georgia and her ability to act selflessly then the woman could have sustained a much more serious illness or injury.
