Falmouth Police Cadets – including a group of new recruits – have resumed their routine weekly activities after enjoying a summer full of community engagement.

The group of 13 to 17-year-olds spent the past few weeks enjoying community fairs, leaflet drops, kit car racing, parades, Falmouth Week and the Tall Ships Regatta. The cadets completed more than 80 hours of community engagement by volunteering their time to support different events in the town.

The youngsters also enjoyed racing electric cars at RAF St Mawgan, near Newquay, as part of the Cop Car Project, and raised money to continue funding the project, as well as supporting the annual Falmouth Carnival as its colourful entrants walked through the town during Falmouth Week in August.

PCSO Ellie Grey, cadet leader for Falmouth, said: “I am so proud of the cadets that I work with. They are a committed group of young people who want to support their community and learn new skills. They have a real desire to be good role models to other young people and this is clear when you see them working on their cop car project.

“It’s really inspiring to see them engage, support and encourage others to succeed. They are keen to learn and share their learning with others which is always encouraged.

“The group could not continue without the support of the adult volunteers who attend each week to help, and I can’t thank them enough.

“The group is still growing and, after a break from the classroom over the summer, we are now back to our regular meetings each week. We have some newcomers this term so it’s great to see some new faces.

“We’re looking forward to the term ahead with first aid courses, personal safety, presentations and some team building fun towards Christmas.”

The cadets were able to support two family fun days this year – for the Beacon Resource Centre and Lambs Lane Association.

The youngsters meet weekly for classroom based lessons at a business premises on a Falmouth business park as well as outside activities such as speed watch and reassurance patrols in the local area.

PCSO Grey said: “The group enjoy learning about the different procedures, policies and crimes within the force as well as looking at the different roles of a police officer or member of police staff. They also enjoy learning from other professionals within the public sector, finding out about their contributions to the community and how the police can work alongside them.”
