Pupils at Constantine School put their entrepreneurial skills to the test when given a £1 coin and told to make |as much money from it as possible to put towards their forthcoming trip to London.

Head teacher Helen Bancroft is only too aware of the financial pressures on families, so in a bid to ease the burden of the cost of the year six trip to the capital, she handed out the coins with the instruction they should be used in some way to contribute to an after-school market.

Whether the £1 was used to buy ingredients to bake buns, offered as a prize in a game, used to buy materials to make something to be sold, or spent to buy sweets to place in a jar for other pupils to guess the number – the choice was theirs.

After being given some time to decide and then to stock their stall, the pupils held a market after school when fellow pupils and parents were invited to support their efforts and snap up the produce on offer.

By the end of the afternoon, over £300 had been raised for the London Challenge which will go into a pot to bring down the overall cost of the trip for all parents of the 20 children who’ll be off to the capital for three days from October 22.

While in London, the pupils will enjoy the novelty of sleeping on board HMS Belfast, have a tour around the Houses of Parliament, visit the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum and visit a school to forge links with children there. Perhaps the highlight for many, though, will be a trip to the West End to see a performance of The Lion King.
