Christmas has arrived in Penryn as the town twinkles thanks to the annual lights switch-on.

Hundreds of people turned out to see the Lanner Silver Band lead a procession including the town’s mayor Councillor Gillian Grant, members of the council and even Father Christmas, from the Memorial Garden to the Methodist Church.

Once there Michael Moore, the head of the Christmas lights committee, introduced the mayor and Robin Cowan, headteacher of Penryn Infants and Junior Schools, before Mr Cowan officially turned the illuminations on throughout |the town.

Mr Cowan said: “It was great fun to be involved. I thought it was a great evening, a great turnout, and a |great atmosphere.

“I made the point that it’s a wonderful community in Penryn, and I know I’m biased, but I think |the children are the best children |in the world.”

Following the pressing of the button, the school choir and Lanner Band led carol singing, and Embrace Dance Fitness enlisted several Santas for a dance performance, while the town council welcomed residents into the town hall to |warm themselves with mulled wine |and mince pies.

The mayor also announced |the winners of the town’s |Christmas window display competition, which was won by Cornwall Hospice Care, with Dave’s All Occasion Cakes in second, |The Boathouse in third and Lucy Turner Furniture and Surface Design coming fourth.
