It was a case of ping-pong perseverance at the Dracaena Centre recently as the south west’s oldest table tennis club held a marathon match.

Falmouth Docks Table Tennis Club was running the 12 hour table tennis event, with members playing in shifts from 10am to 10pm, to raise funds for new match quality tables.

Dennis Williams, the club chairman, said: “We decided to raise money by having the teams sponsored, and all the teams went in shifts, and we raised £1,400 to get new tables for our sport.

“So we had county players down there, youngsters, pensioners, everybody down there supporting it.”

The players ranged from the youngest, aged nine, to Dennis himself, who is still playing at “touching 80 years old.”

“The event went smoothly,” Dennis said. “We were delighted with all the support we had.

“The players enjoyed themselves immensely.”

The group, set up in 1949 and of which Dennis is the only founding member still active, was aiming to raise £2,000, as new performance tables cost £500 each.

It coaches children to county level and beyond, as well as taking children from local schools to compete in competitions.

The Falmouth Docks Table Tennis Club holds competitions and events at the Dracaena Centre, and runs weekly training sessions at Penryn College from 7pm to 9.30pm on Thursday evenings.
