A Falmouth soldier is nearing the end of his deployment in Sierra Leone where he has been part of the international effort to tackle the deadly Ebola outbreak.

Warrant Officer 1st Class (WO1) Wayne Mitchell, of the Royal Logistic Corps, is deployed as the Force Ordnance Warrant Officer and as such heads up a team of logisticians that keep the whole task force operating efficiently.

Due to the environment in Sierra Leone and the poor infrastructure around the country, logistics is a real challenge for all working there. With long road and helicopter moves and searing heat, the re-supply of locations in remote corners of the country poses a huge planning task for Wayne and his team.

As he is the senior Warrant Officer, Wayne also accompanies the Brigade Commander on his duties which means he has the added responsibility of ensuring that all UK military personnel are looked after correctly and they live in the best conditions possible.

Over 700 troops rely on the sound coordination of supplies by Wayne and his team, who have been working tirelessly in the Freetown headquarters.

Wayne, 37, said: “This deployment is something completely different to anything I have experienced in 19 years’ service. The deployment has gone very well so far - there have been challenging but worthwhile experiences but the best part is being part of this very specialist team here in Freetown.”

The father of three, and husband to Jaime, is nearing the end of his tour and expects to be home towards the end of this month.
