Anyone interested in serving trhe people of Penryn are being invited to step forward for election to the town council.

There are currently two vacancies on Penryn Town Council, one in the West Ward and the other in the East Ward, and the official notices were published on January 21.

Electors have until 14 working days from that date – until February 10 – to request that an election be held.

Requests must be made in writing to the returning officer at Cornwall Council and if they receive fewer than ten written requests, the vacancies will be filled by the town council through co-option.

The council said: “Please note that as the vacancies are in two different wards each one is treated separately, which means that there could be an election in one, none or both of the wards.”

If there is an election in one or both wards a date will be set by Cornwall Council's Electoral Services and polling cards will be sent out in the usual way.

If there is no election the current town councillors will select a new member to fill the vacancy.

Notice of this co-option will be advertised and prospective councillors will be invited to write to the council setting out their reasons for wishing to join and what they believe they can bring to the role.

Eligible candidates will be invited to attend a meeting to address the councillors, after which a decision will be taken in confidential session.
