A Falmouth University lecturer has been banned from the road for drink driving after a concerned member of the public stopped his moped after seeing him fall of it once already.

Kuldip Singh-Barmi, a senior lecturer in dance at Falmouth University, living at Basset Street, Falmouth, pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates’ Court  to drink driving at Falmouth on February 8, when he registered 92 mcg, nearly three times the limit.

The witness was so concerned for Singh-Barmi's safety  he caught the machine by its handlebars and brought it to a standstill .

He had already seen the rider fall off once before re-mounting the machine and riding it further.

Alison May, for the CPS, said it was about 12.30am when staff from one of the pubs on The Moor had refused him entry because of his intoxicated state and had then seen him ride off on a moped.

He fell off, got back on again, and continued to ride on until a witness stopped him.

The defendant, who had no previous convictions, said he was sorry for the offence.

Probation officer Mags Hopwood, referred to his alcohol problem, saying he had been making progress with it but had lapsed on the day of the offence, and was now returning to Alcoholics Anonymous again.

Singh-Barmi was fined £915 with £176 costs and surcharge and banned from driving for 24 months.
