The chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police has called the crowds of over 6,000 people walking in memory of PC Andy Hocking in Falmouth this weekend, 'truly moving'.

PC Hocking's family led the procession, followed by members of Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, the South West Ambulance Service and the RNLI.

Sector Inspector for Falmouth and Helston, Ian Thompson said: “On both a personal and professional level, I have been overwhelmed by the public’s response to the passing of PC Andy Hocking, and the memorial walk cemented that feeling.

“For thousands of people to pay tribute to Andy in that way is a mark of the effect he had on people’s lives and was a fitting tribute to a wonderful policeman, colleague and friend. I know the police of Falmouth have taken solace and comfort in the public’s gesture and I would like to extend our thanks to the community of Falmouth.

“Whilst policing in Falmouth is more than just one person, the loss of Andy leaves a scar that will take time to heal. However the positive legacy he leaves will be felt for years to come.”

Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer shared his thoughts on the memorial walk: “It was a truly moving day in Falmouth in tribute to Andy Hocking, without equal in my experience. Andy has a wonderful family; Colleagues, friends and the people of Falmouth walked beside them in an exceptional tribute to him this weekend. He was the epitome of a neighbourhood police officer.”
