Police at Falmouth are encouraging people who own fake firearms to drop them into the station for safe disposal after an elderly man with two realistic looking guns had sought advice on what to do with them.

A gas fired air pistol and a replica Smith and Wesson handgun are now in the possession of police, but officers are concerned there could be others out in the community, which if taken onto the streets, could spark an armed response team turning out.

“These guns look so real,” said PC Mat Cummins. “I'm a police officer and I cannot tell the difference at first glance. We need to get them off the streets. Some people may think because there are no pellets 'what harm can then do' and give them to little Johnny.

“But, if he's seen with one by a member of the public and the police are called, he will very quickly find himself surrounded by armed police.”

Anyone who does have any replica weapons is urged to dispose of them safely by handing them into Falmouth Police Station. “Everyone thinks the station is closed because the front office is closed, but if you have these sorts of items you can bring them in,” said PC Cummins.

“I would advise you to phone first on 101 to give us a head's up on what you are bringing down so if you are stopped carrying them on the way in, we will be aware.”
