Hopes are high that this year's May Day in Penryn will be bigger and better than before, as the celebration is held in the Glasney Valley for the second year Starting on the Glasney College field at 10am, celebrants will mark the 750th anniversary of the college, and the town will welcome the deputy grand bard of Cornwall, Merv Davey, to start the day by delivering a proclamation.

The main event will take place at the henge on Doorstep Green, with the backdrop of the town's viaduct, and there will be a parade along the Glasney Valley and on to the May Pole led by folk band Bagas Crowd, and everyone is welcome to take part, with no experience necessary.The Glasney Green Space Regeneration Project has also arranged for support from artists Simon Persighetti and Katie Etheridge, who are inviting everyone to act out a rebuilding of the missing walls of Glasney.Pip Carlton, of the GGSRP, said: “We just want everyone to have fun. However if you would like to practise before the day please come to the, 'Henge', under the viaduct in the Glasney Valley at 12pm on May 2nd.

We will have a makeshift pole and ribbons so you can practise the weave. The dress code for the day is dress up, dress down but wearing a smile is mandatory. Fancy dress with a spring or woodland creature theme welcome. Wear whatever you are comfortable in.

“And bring a picnic” There will also be a habitat workshop and bee story by Laura Salmon and the All Season's Storymaker's, a prize giving for the art competition, a history walk and talk by John Kirby, face painting, a tree and flower spotting competition, and possibly an impromptu tug-of-war.

The group is also welcoming entries in any medium or style for the art competition, on the themes of Penryn History, Glasney College, and Glasney Valley, in the age groups under 5, 6 to 10, 11 to 15, 16 to 18, and over 18, to be submitted at Xtrospective Gallery on Lower Market Street by May 1.Work will be displayed among the trees on May Day and judged by Sarah Thomas of Xtrospective Gallery.
