The League of Friends of Helston Community Hospital received a welcome boost recently with a cheque for £1,200 raised by the town mayor Mike Thomas.

The cheque, which represented money raised through a series of events organised over the last 12 months, was presented to Dr Ken Whittle at the annual town meeting, as the league is one of the mayor’s nominated charities for this civic year.

Handing over the money, which brings the total given to the group to £2,200 this year, Mr Thomas described visiting the hospital with Dr Whittle and all the good work the group does, describing watching the doctor moving around the hospital as “like watching a footballer, I don’t know how he does it.”

Dr Whittle thanked the mayor for his support, and gave a short talk on the history of the hospital, which was built with donations from the townspeople in 1923, and the work of the League of Friends.

The group raises money for new equipment for the hospital, including beds, televisions, and decorations, and recently purchased a sound and light show which is used to calm patients who are in distress.

He explained that all money raised by the league goes straight into the hospital with no administration costs, and added: “We appreciate it incredibly. Thank you all so very much.”
