Builders, carpenters, plumbers and interior designers are working round the clock to complete the interior refurbishment of the former Remedies' building in Falmouth in time for its reopening as the latest Lounge Bar at the end of next month.

The Falmouth Lounge Bar will be the second in Cornwall, the first being in Truro, and will create 30 new jobs within the restaurant and use local suppliers where possible.

The company is investing £650,000 on repairing and bringing the Grade ll listed former Town Hall and fire station building back into use and is aiming for an official opening date of May 28.

A spokesperson for Loungers said: “The building originally contained the County Court office, registrar's office, the High Bailiff's office and apartments when it was used as a magistrates' court.

“Internally the property retains some features of the 19th century court room and the grand stone staircase within the main entrance hall. We will be looking to retain and repair most of the building's key features - it is what attracted us to this site.

“By removing a nightclub and creating a fantastic family friendly all-day restaurant we play a key part in the council's plans to improve The Moor. Our ethos has always been to invest and contribute to the local community - this is good for everyone.”

The company's move into Falmouth and the renovation of the former nightclub building has been welcomed by town manager, Richard Gates. “It is a lovely building, but it is one of the main buildings in the town that has been looking drab,” he said. “This is quite a big refit that will really enhance this area.”

Loungers opened its first venue, a Lounge bar, in the Bedminster area of Bristol in August 2002. Since then the company has undergone a large and rapid expansion with now more than 60 Lounge Bars and Cosy Clubs operating sites across the country.

The company is confident the Falmouth branch will be a success even though the location was not their first choice. Rob Redgrave, of Miller Commercial who negotiated the Loungers Ltd lease agreement on the building, said: “After having located suitable premises for Loungers in Truro the next natural progression for them in Cornwall, was Falmouth.

“The former Remedies premises were available, which was suggested to them, however at the time the preference was the Discovery Quay end of town.

“After some time of seeking suitable properties for them, we concluded that Remedies was the only suitable premises and we feel is also a very good location and amazing building.”
