A charity for the homeless has said it was "overwhelmed" after two young Constantine schoolgirls raised more than £100 with a cake sale.

Polly Bailey, aged seven, was inspired to arrange the fundraiser after seeing a man sleeping rough on the streets and deciding she wanted to do something to help.

She and two helpers, including Mirryn Green, also seven, organised the bake sale at Constantine School just after the may bank holiday, to collect money for Cornish homeless charity St Petroc's.

She said: "I looked at some charities for he homeless, and thought if I donated to a big charity little bits of money would go to a lot of people, a small charity would give more money to people."

Mirryn said the cake sale was "Like a big lump of icing, with lots of people in the hall."

Dave Brown, young person worker at St Petroc's, said the £117 raised was an "amazing amount for a cake sale" and he was "absolutely overwhelmed" with the girls' achievement.

He said: "If it wasn't for people like Polly and Mirryn and others in the community who help us we would not be able to do the work that we do, and we're very, very grateful."
