The head of a Penryn based children's activity charity met the Queen recently when he visited Buckingham Palace after being named as the recipient of a voluntary service award.

Adrian Richards, chief executive of BF Adventure, and Nicola Edwards, the group's volunteer coordinator, travelled to London as winners of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.

The pair attended a garden party at the palace on Thursday May 28, where they met the monarch, along with other winners of this year’s award.

successful award nominees are officially named on the Queen's birthday, June 2, and BF Adventure will receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho, later this summer.

Adrian said: "It was a privilege to meet the queen at Buckingham Palace and it is a huge honour for the charity to receive this award.

"The staff and volunteers work incredibly hard for the Charity and to be recognised for their efforts is fantastic. Nicola added: “I’d like to specifically thank our amazing team of volunteers at BF Adventure, both past and present. Volunteering at BF Adventure is not for the fainthearted and while it can be fun and rewarding at the same time, the commitment and support our volunteers give us is like gold dust. We couldn’t operate without them. Thank you BF Adventure Volunteers."

The charity is currently recruiting volunteers in all areas, and is looking for drivers for the month of July. If you have D1 on your driving licence, a MIDAS qualification or any other bus driving qualification, and would like to help, contact Nicola at nicolae@bfadventure.org or call 01326 340912.
