There were two grand openings and one fond farewell in Penryn on Thursday as two schools officially became one academy and the pupils said goodbye to a governor.

The children of Penryn Primary Academy enjoyed a day of activities including a treasure hunt based on the history of Penryn and a picnic lunch, culminating in a visit from a search and rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose, as they celebrated the 'Big Launch' of the new establishment.

The launch was the official recognition that the academy had taken over from the previously separate Penryn Infants and Junior schools, and the children buddies up across year groups to take part in the events.

Jo Davidson, SEN co-ordinator at the school, said: "'The Big Launch was a fantastic success. It was an opportunity for all of the children and staff to join together to celebrate the amalgamation of two schools.

The children enjoyed their quiz, picnic launch and of course, the visit from the Royal Navy. We are very much looking forward to a positive future as Penryn Primary."

Meanwhile town councillor Mary May, a long standing member of the school's board of governors who is stepping down, cut the ribbon on a new piece of nautical themed play equipment and was presented with flowers in recognition of the work she has done.

Opening the new wooden boat play equipment, named the Spirit of Penryn, Mrs May said: "God bless her and all who play on her."

Assistant head teacher James Brown thanked the town council for funding they donated for the project, as well as Cornwall Councillor Tony Martin for money donated from his community chest, and Penryn based SKB Sails who also helped with the build.

He said: "It's great to be working hand in hand with the council. It's lovely, the council and the community together."

Head teacher Robin Cowen thanked Mrs May, and said: "She has done such a fantastic job over the years, supporting the schools and bringing the schools together.

"We are very grateful, thank you very much."
