The man responsible for quite literally brightening up Penryn every winter has been recognised with an award from Cornwall Council.

Michael Moore, organiser of Penryn Christmas Lights, was presented with a Civic Award at County Hall in Truro for his contribution to bringing joy to the town every Christmas.

Michael, who had not been able to attend the awards ceremony in May after being nominated by Councillor Mary May, was presented with his award by the council chairman, Councillor Ann Kerridge, over a Cornish cream tea.

Councillor May said: “Our streets at Christmas time would be a dull place if Michael didn’t go the extra mile for our town and he is incredibly worthy of this award.”

Mr Moore can be seen in the town centre every year from September onwards, leading a small team of volunteers with ladders and strings of lights as they prepare for the big switch on in December.

His nomination from Councillor May reads: "In fact the festive display has been almost entirely dependent on a small but outstandingly committed group of volunteers led by Michael.

"Michael has been involved for over fifteen years with organising the town’s display. Every year he oversees the raising of the funds needed to ensure that Penryn looks at its very best at Christmas.

"Every year hundreds of people attend the annual switch on in Penryn which is a joyous occasion for the whole community made possible by Michael’s efforts.

"Michael is out in all winds and weathers from September to the end of January, when the lights come down and are stored for the following year. Some year’s tree lights have been stolen but he battles on against the odds to ensure no-one is disappointed."
