Penryn residents complaining about the state of St Gluvias Cemetery are being asked to turn words into actions by the town's deputy mayor.

Shelley Peters, who is also one of the organisers of the Friends of St Gluvias Cemetery, is looking for helpers to give a little bit of their time to help with grass cutting and general maintenance.

The group has just finished a second weekend of work, with Shelley reporting that around half of the grass in the cemetery has been cut, but asking that more people offer just an hour of their time to help with the other half, and to keep the newly cleared areas well trimmed.

She said: "Despite lots and lots of people complaining about the state that it's in, very few turn up and offer practical support.

"We are never going to get it to where we need it to be without support from the people who want to see it looking nice."

Five people turned up to help with strimming the site on Saturday, with another two visiting on Sunday with shears to help clear away more vegetation.

The group included Phil Whittingham, a volunteer from Co-op Funeral Care in Truro, which has offered its expertise in helping to restore the town's war memorial.

Shelley said: "The volunteers that have come have worked really hard. It's a great improvement over there, it's looking much better already.

"With a few more volunteers we could maybe get it done in the next hit, then we just need people for maintenance.

"We have had lots of positive comments from members of the public that were coming seeing us do it."

The group's next meeting will be on Sunday, August 9, to give people who work on Saturdays a chance to come along and get involved, but Shelley said that volunteers should not be afraid to offer their help whenever they have a spare hour.

She said: "We are not expecting people to come down all day, just for an hour.

"We have two petrol strimmers donated by members of the public who are unable to offer physical support right now, and they are available for anybody to use."
