Penryn echoed to the sounds of a brass band and boots marching as the Royal British Legion paraded through town for the annual VE and VJ parade on Sunday.

The weather held off in the early afternoon as the organisation's Penryn branch was joined by groups from as far away as Tideford and Torpoint, as well as those closer to home.

Breage and District Silver Band led a parade which included the mayor Mark Snowdon and his wife and mayoress Diane, deputy mayor Shelley Peters, Saracen Award winner Rose Webber, mayor of Falmouth John Body and and his wife and mayoress Linda, Mylor Parish Council chairman John Symonds and his wife Daphne, with Penryn councillors and the town's army cadets led by their new leader Jamie Streets.

The procession worked its way through the town before stopping at the memorial garden on Quay hill, where wreaths were laid to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in Europe and Japan and father Ian Froom led a commemoration service.

Legion branch chairman Derek Williams said: "A good number of residents and civic dignitaries attended the commemoration, which is always very pleasing. Many standard bearers also attended from far and wide.

"For me, the most heart-warming moment was to hear the words to Tipperary break out from behind me as we marched back, behind Breage Band, to salute our civic leaders. I couldn't help joining in."

The afternoon ended with World War Two themed dancing and singing from the Ritzy Belles, refreshments in the Temperance Hall, and a raffle raising £140 towards a veterans' visit to Normandy next year.
