Oyez! Oyez! Penryn's town crier has his new regalia and is ready for next week's town fair.

Jim Henderson, who was announced as the town's new crier by mayor Mark Snowdon at the mayor making ceremony in May, is ready to represent the town in all his finery.

Jim was measured for his historic outfit in shortly after taking up the role, and on Wednesday it was delivered by Ray Charlton, of Michaels Civic Robes, Bristol, who made sure the fit was just right.

Jim, whose next official duty will be Penryn Fair Day on August 29, said the town decided it needed a town crier and he did not think twice when offered the job.

He said: "I am very pleased to be offered the post, and to get the nice uniform."

As a Rotarian and former Penryn Rotary president, Jim was pleased that he could keep a strong link between the town council and the club, which has donated a new town crier's bell.

He is also interested in the prospect of becoming a member of the which organises competitions, with categories including best dressed and best cry.

Overall, he is happy to be keeping the town's traditions alive, claiming that Penryn's town crier was the first to announce the death of Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar, four days before the news reached Westminster.

His new role mean he will join the town's two mace bearers as part of all major civic occasions, including mayor making and remembrance services, as well as large university events such as graduation ceremonies, and "any other time the mayor is in his full regalia and wants someone to precede him."

He said: "After becoming semi retired I needed something to keep me off the streets, now I've got a job that puts me back on the streets."
