Hundreds of pensioners were quids in at Trago Mills in Falmouth on Monday, after queuing up to collect the annual £3 Christmas cash gift the store hands out for Pensioners’ Week.
Mrs Chris Clarke, store manager at Falmouth, together with senior managers at the store, handed out more than £3,220 in cash gifts from 9.30am until 1pm.
Trago chairman and owner Bruce Robertson said: “We all enjoy it immensely and hope it makes at least a little difference to those of more mature years who are as deserving as any.
"If we can manage it, just think what a difference it would make to pensioners if a few of Trago’s competitors followed suit – they surely have amply deep pockets."
Staff at the store entered into the spirit of the occasion, with many wearing fancy dress. Mrs Clarke added: “Pensioners’ Week is always a special time of year for us. It’s a great opportunity to meet our customers – many of whom have been coming to Trago for years - and wish them Merry Christmas.”
As well as the cash gift, the pensioners were all given a raffle ticket by Tina Catunarich, who has been running the free raffle on pound day for more than a quarter of a century.
For the duration of Pensioners’ Week, which runs from Monday November 23 to Friday November 27, senior shoppers with an ID are entitled to a 20 per cent discount off up to £30 spent in most departments.
