The plight of the sparrow population in Devoran has touched the hearts of the local community. A flock were made homeless through the removal of the old roof of the village hall during the ongoing refurbishment works but are about to be re-housed thanks to generous residents.

Following a plea by the village hall committee, local resident Malcolm Walton offered to build new double nesting boxes for the feathered friends with each one being sponsored by individuals and groups including 17th St Johns Devoran Scout Group. Six in all have been completed and will be erected in time for the nest building season once the new roof is completed.

According to Devoran Village Hall Committee chair Ann Cunningham, the response from the community was overwhelming. “We put the plight of the sparrows on Facebook and were inundated with offers of nest box sponsorship. One sponsor from Feock said that she was glad to see there was finally some affordable housing in Devoran!”

It is hoped the sparrows return to their new home and will enjoy the newly refurbished village hall which has benefitted from a £250,000 SITA Cornwall Trust flagship grant for 2015 and is scheduled for completion in Spring 2016.
